Pablo Neruda was born Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, on July 12th, 1904, in Parral, Chile. Chile is a land with a diversity of climates, and Parral is in the temperate-zone. His mother died of tuberculosis a month after he was born. His father moved the family to Temuco, a frontier outpost in the far south of the country, where the young Richardo grew up among half finished houses and torrents of rain.
